You could also use:
Finding a cook was his most urgent problem.
Finding a cook was the most urgent problem of his.
I don't think 'To find' is used as commonly as finding, it does sound a bit bookish to me, unless it's meant to sound formal, in which case the first two are fine.

I agree, both of them can be used, they meant the exact same thing, however the second one is used more in normal conversation.
You could also use: Seeing them together is strange.
